‘The farmer as a water manager’: A network project

In collaboration with 11 other partners from Denmark, we have initiated a network project known as ‘The farmer as a water manager’. The focus is to develop new mitigation and adaptation measures. These will enable more appropriate handling of future floods, while efficiently managing water for agriculture.

‘The farmer as a water manager’ is a Green Development and Demonstration Project under the Danish Ministry of Food. It is widely acknowledged as a vital part of the efforts to prevent flooding in urban areas.

The project aims to bring key stakeholders together to create solutions in the rural landscape that protect downstream urban areas. The partnering entities include municipalities, research institutions as well as private companies.

Fundamentally, the project strives to provide answers to the following questions:

  1. Is it possible for the farmer to incorporate flood planning as a new business area?
  2. What is the potential in relation to other climate protection measures?

We contribute to the project with our professional expertise and global knowledge of several variables including:

  • flooding
  • catchment hydrology
  • impacts of climate changes
  • integrated solutions

The combined efforts of the partners and stakeholders will focus on a few selected catchments. This will help to create practical flood mitigation measures and adaptation strategies that match local conditions.
