On 29 November 2013, DHI Group, along with the National Hydro Met Service of Vietnam (NHMS) conducted the kick-off workshop for a project in building technology in online urban flood forecasting for Hanoi City, Vietnam. NHMS is supported by the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment of Vietnam (MONRE).

The EUR 625,000 project – funded 50% by Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and 50% by MONRE – will be completed over a 24-month period. While majority of the work will be carried out by NHMS, we will provide the requisite technical assistance for building technology and software transfer.

“Urban Flooding is becoming a major concern for most of the metropolitan areas in Vietnam, not less the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cites – where the fast urbanisation process plus the effects of climate change impacts have been pushing greater urban flood risks year after year,” Dr. Le Cong Thanh – General Director of NHMS – mentioned in his opening speech at the workshop. “The success of this project will help to provide an effective non-structure solution for the cities in better planning for flood risks alleviation, and building the first ever technology in online urban forecasting in NHMS operational network, which will be documented for replication in forecasting network of NHMS in other cities in Vietnam in the coming years.”

This project will be jointly carried out by DHI DK and DHI VN.
