Paving the way to Asia for innovative environmental technologies

While innovative technologies are widely called for, the lack of reliable information about their performance, risks and benefits ultimately often discourages both investors and customers, who then go for the established technologies.

ETV_LogoWhile innovative technologies are widely called for, the lack of reliable information about their performance, risks and benefits ultimately often discourages both investors and customers, who then go for the established technologies. Environmental Technology Verification, ETV, aims at providing reliable and independent information about the performance of innovative environmental technologies, in order to overcome this problem. DHI can now support market entry for water technologies in China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines through cooperation established with the ETV organisations in these countries.

Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Programmes develop test protocols and verify the performance of innovative technologies that have the potential to improve protection of human health and the environment. The first ETV programme was initiated in 1995 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States. DHI is a partner of the Danish verification body DANETV, where DHI operates as DANETV Water Centre. As such, DANETV has been verifying technologies within the areas of water, air, energy and agriculture since 2008. From 2012, DANETV will also verify technologies under the European ETV pilot programme launched in December 2011, extended by the areas of waste and resources.

Worldwide, there are more than 10 active ETV programmes. As a result, technology owners may need to repeat testing and verification when entering new markets. To reduce the need for replicate test and verification and initiate cooperation, DHI has now visited the established ETV-programmes in Korea, Japan and the Philippines as well as the organisation responsible for developing an ETV-programme in China. DHI has already performed verifications together with the ETV-programmes in the US and Canada and is well prepared to do the same with Asian ETV-programmes, enabling developers a smooth entry into those growing markets. Additionally, DHI may assist developers obtaining registration as applicable technologies in Asian countries after European verifications.

Accordingly, DHI is now getting in touch with technology owners that aim for a European verification and are additionally interested in exploiting the new routes to the Asian markets. If you want to be one of the first on the move – don’t hesitate to get in touch!
