World Oceans Day 2017: Our Oceans, Our Future

The ocean deserves its own day

World Oceans Day is a global day celebrated on 8 June every year.

The concept of a World Oceans Day first came about in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The idea was to celebrate the world’s shared ocean, which makes up two-thirds of the surface of the earth, and to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our everyday lives.

An important objective of World Oceans Day is to highlight ways people can help protect our oceans – the very foundations of life.

This year’s theme is ‘Our Oceans, Our Future’.

Why care about the oceans?
The world’s oceans make it possible for humankind to live on Earth. It is true – the ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, buffers the impacts of global warming, provides food and drive an overall global system to sustain life, jobs and international trade.

However, climate change and human activities lead to pollution and destruction of this precious resource.

Adapting human activities to the oceans
At DHI, we use a ‘work with nature’ approach to help adapt human activities to the oceans.  As part of the World Ocean Council, we aim to help businesses reduce environmental risks and protect nature while carrying out developments sustainably.

We engage in projects that help reduce plastic pollution. A recent theoretical modelling study of Jakarta Bay identified locations that would enable us to get the most out of a cleanup system deployment and potentially be our answer to clean seas.

Our work in managing underwater sounds help protect and minimise impacts on animals living in the oceans. Curious to know more about how sounds affect marine life, such as whales and dolphins? Read this blog article to know more.
