Supporting the efficient management of aquaculture zones in South East Asia

Adopting best practices in aquaculture can strongly reinforce the resilience of this industry regionally and globally. As such, we have been relentlessly presenting our experiences and tools to farmers, authorities, consultants and investors, demonstrating how the combination of expertise and modelling using MIKE Powered by DHI software can provide optimal solutions for the development of sustainable practices. These efforts are carried out to increase the confidence of the multiple stakeholders involved in the development of a modern and resilient aquaculture industry, which in turn will lead to greater capacity to support Malaysia’s growth in the coming decades.

Our participation in meetings such as this month’s summit organised by WWF-Malaysia, Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council at Hilton Kuala Lumpur favours the use of modern tools to support the aquaculture industry from planning to fork. Previously, our team also participated in additional stakeholder meetings in Malaysia to meet local farmers and share experiences with other experts such as Professor David Bengtson of the Department of Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Science, University of Rhodes Island, to discuss potential solutions to the regional challenges.

DHI’s capacities in producing studies on site selection, connectivity between production areas, sedimentation estimation (depositions), and eutrophication are second to none. We will continue to use this knowledge to help increase awareness about the environmental impacts of aquaculture and develop solutions and mitigation measures to support both the industry and the environment.
