Minister of Development Brunei officiates flood risk management seminar

In collaboration with the Ministry of Development Brunei Darussalam, DHI Brunei offered a one-day flood risk management seminar on 28 November 2015.

The seminar held at the Ministry’s training centre received an impressive turnout of 150 people from government and non-government agencies, private sectors and educational institutions. Brunei’s Minister of Development, Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Hj Bahrin Abdullah, officiated the event.

Flood events are prevalent in Brunei Darussalam and changing climate patterns are predicted to increase flooding in the region. DHI Brunei’s Managing Director, Joshua Jon van Berkel and DHI Malaysia’s Head of Department, Water Resources, Terry Van Kalken emphasised the importance of having an integrated solution to predict and manage floods, as well as minimise their impacts on the environment and society.

The seminar also covered best practices and sustainable solutions to effectively and efficiently tackle flood concerns in Brunei Darussalam.

‘Through our work on related studies, we sensed a need for greater dissemination of integrated flood management know-how among Bruneian stakeholders. An ACADEMY by DHI workshop was the best means to accomplish this. The Bruneian Public Works Department were willing to cooperate and we worked closely with them to make the seminar a great success.  As DHI BN endeavours to serve Brunei with flood risk, and various other water and environmental issues, we believe that the event represents a positive step forward.’ - Joshua Jon van Berkel, Managing Director, DHI Brunei

The one-day thematic seminar was held at Brunei’s Ministry of Environment’s training centre.
